I think those of you with a keen interest in investing will find most of the optional readings interesting, and they are written for a broad audience, so they are not difficult to complete or understand. I recommend reading as many of them as you have time (and desire) to complete, but none of them are essential for you to complete the course. Most of these concern the history and investing philosophy of Warren Buffet and are a nice “real world” counterpoint to an academic treatment of securities analysis. I listed a lot of optional readings in the syllabus. The Excel assignments will be posted in the corresponding module on Canvas. The quizzes will be taken online (through Canvas) or submitted from a spreadsheet template. The quizzes will count for 40% of your grade the remaining 60% will come from the Excel assignments. There will be a quiz and at least one Excel assignment for each topic. This course requires a working knowledge of time value of money calculations and basic statistics. The prerequisite for this course is GBA811 (Principles of Finance) or the equivalent. Most of the applied work will be done using Excel spreadsheets. The models will be studies in mathematical detail as well as used in practical applications. We will study the most common models for estimating the value of equity securities.
